Deadly Beauties - The Dart Frogs

LSeT trainee Snehashish breaks down the biology, behaviour, and care requirements of one of the most visually striking species on the planet.

Few animals do as much with so little surface area as a dart frog. A two-centimetre amphibian, kept on a litter substrate and a microfauna culture, can hold a roomful of visitors longer than most large mammals will. Up close they are also a lesson in why colour, behaviour, and chemistry are inseparable in the wild.

Where the toxin comes from

Dart frogs born and reared in captivity are not toxic. The chemistry is borrowed, not built.

Wild dart frogs sequester alkaloids from a narrow set of dietary invertebrates — chiefly ants, mites, and certain beetles. Strip that diet away and the toxin profile collapses within a single moult cycle.

This is what makes them safe in captive collections and also what makes their conservation in the wild so fragile: it is not just the forest, it is the forest's invertebrate community that has to be intact.

Husbandry essentials

  • A bioactive vivarium with a stable springtail and isopod population.
  • Daily misting, plus a one-degree spread between basking and shaded surfaces.
  • A varied diet of dusted fruit flies, springtails, and small isopods — not a fruit-fly monoculture.
